Secret Six TPB #1

Picked this one up for class, but I was kind of excited to read a book by Gail Simone – I’ve heard a lot about her since I started reading comic books. I was really expecting a lot. That probably did not help me out, honestly. Also what didn’t help was not knowing the vast majority of these characters. I’m pretty sure the only character I recognized right away was Batman! I spent the first three or four issues just working out who was who and what each person could do. It was a lot of characters to learn! I was having a really hard time reading until I got the characters down. After that, I got sucked into the storyline – it was pretty interesting! Oh well…since this is pre-New 52, I’m not thinking I’ll be reading any more (I’ve heard that anything pre-New 52 is kind of hard to get your hands on) but it was certainly interesting and I would definitely search out more by Gail Simone!

Final Opinion: Solid

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (4/17 – 4/23)

Overall

Kind of running late today guys – sorry!

This was kind of a slow week in the comics department. I think real life kind of snuck up on me and gave me a sucker punch – it’s been pretty crazy around here, and it doesn’t look like things are going to get much better for a little while at least. So reading may be a bit slow for a bit longer. Sorry guys!! Otherwise, I’m really happy that I started catching up on series. Finally getting to read the beginning of Captain Marvel and getting through AvX were probably the highlights of my week (I finally got to cross them off my list of issues I still needed to read!) Hopefully I can get through the new stuff and class stuff this week, but we shall see

Mini-Opinions – Monday Edition

Not a whole lot this time around – this weekend was pretty crazy!!

Wolverine & The X-Men TPB #3

Well, if you were to read this Trade by itself, it would be the most confusing thing in the world. All of these stories, except for the last one, seem to always fall in between issues of Avengers Vs. X-Men. Reading it by itself, you would have no idea why Scott and his group went insane, why we went from Hope going to the moon to Hope trying to be smuggled away by Black Widow. Luckily for me, I decided to try and read AvX in tandem with this book, so I had an idea of what was going on…but it makes for a kind of sad Trade. I won’t judge too harshly, because if AU says anything, it’s that events aren’t always what they’re hyped up to be. I’ll get through this one and the next one, and probably start making decisions based on where the story picks up afterwards.

Final Opinion: Iffy

Avengers Vs. X-Men

So I FINALLY got around to reading this whole thing. I’ve had all of these issues sitting around for a while, but it was always on the bottom of the pile. Reading Wolverine & the X-Men kind of forced me to read this as well 🙂 All in all, this wasn’t a bad story – certainly not as bad as I’ve heard from some people. I think it might be somewhat better than AU currently is (though AU is starting to pick up) Now, I’m fully aware that I got to read this entire thing from beginning to end without having to wait two or three weeks between issues, which may have made the whole thing go down easier. I also totally agree that the storytelling wasn’t great and was rather inconsistent from issue to issue because of the changing writers every issue. I understand why it was done…but it did make for some interesting reading sometimes. But read as a whole, it wasn’t bad. Answers a couple of questions that I’ve had and, being this far out from when this story happened, you can see the ripple effects that this had on a lot of series – which was the point, but I find that interesting to look at!

Captain Marvel #1-#8

So, I was only supposed to read #1-#7 for class (and I think she really meant #1-#6 since that was where the first story arc ended…) but I figured I would read everything that I had so that would have completed the series so far. Captain Marvel has been one of my favorite characters/series since I first picked up Issue #9. Even at that point, most people I was following said that it wasn’t worth going back and reading the beginning, that #9 was a good place to start and just to keep going from there. The story before was just too weird. I’m not entirely sure why they said that, now that I’ve actually read the first eight issues. Yes, these were more sci-fi stories than the down-to-earth stuff we have now, but it was still pretty interesting, and really, the time travel story was a fun primer for Carol’s origin. It was certainly a more interesting way of doing it than just showing it to us through some flashbacks. I enjoyed myself when I was reading them! And the robot story was just hilarious. I loved Carol and Monica going back and forth – they are a pretty funny combo.

Final Opinion: Must Read!

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (4/10-4/16)

Overall

Well, this was an interesting week – slower overall (I think…) but some really good series packed in. Tried a couple of new series, made a lot of decisions on which series I should keep reading, and how to spot them from now on – I feel like this week went really well. I’m sad to see some series go, especially ones I was really hopefully would get better (Indestructible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Uncanny X-Men) but I know I made the right choice in the end. I will try to keep my ear to the ground in case they ever start to pick up, and I can jump back in.

Class wise, I’m really enjoying what we’re learning. I feel like I’m learning a lot and it’s definitely changing the way I look at comics, though I try not to comment on it too much yet. I want to finish off the class first!! But I’m so excited because our interviews this week include Kelly Sue DeConnick!! So excited to hear from her! We almost always have some great questions so I think it’ll be a really good discussion!

My list of things to read is slowly dwindling, which is nice. I feel like, in a few more weeks, I might actually be caught up and only reading new issues or picking up a new series here and there. We shall see, in the end, but I’m hopeful!

Decisions, Decisions…

Okay guys, so I know I’ve been saying that I needed to cut back on the different series I’ve been following, but I haven’t managed to really do so before this week – when I basically forced myself to sit down and think this all out and determine some sort of criteria for what series I stick to, and which ones I want to let go. And I thought I would walk everyone through the process of what I came up with, in case anyone is interested…

Wolverine & The X-Men TPB #2

This story is really just a fun read – the antics are almost always a little silly, but the characters and their interactions keep the whole thing afloat. I love reading about the students at this school, and anytime we focus on them a little I am really happen. Still, though, the teachers are just as interesting! And we did leave the third issue in this trade on a more serious note – poor Broo!! Though we jumped right back into funny stuff really quickly (did anyone else find themselves dying of laughter when Angel dropped Wolverine from god-only-knows how high?). I’ve really been enjoying this series and getting to know, or learning more about, the characters within. It’s been a fun ride! And now I need to go and find the 3rd Trade 🙂

Final Opinion: Must Read!

Mini-Opinions – Friday Edition

I’m going to be really harsh on series this week, guys, because I’m working on figuring out just what series I want to keep reading, and which ones I am not interested in continuing. You’re going to see a lot of drops in this post and on Monday’s post as I figure out just what series I want to keep reading.

Superman: Birthright

I really enjoyed this story, although I don’t know a whole lot about the title character. I’ve never read a Superman story before. I have seen a movie here and there (not quite sure which ones…) and I saw the odd episode of Smallville, but that’s all the exposure I’ve ever had to the Man of Steel. Like with every other, this got bonus points just for being an origin story (because I LOVE origin stories!), but it was also told really well. I feel like the storytelling was pretty spot on, and pretty in line with a basic storyline concept that I’ve been brought up with: You start off with how life typically is (i.e. Clark trying to hide who he is but can’t stop himself from trying to help people at the very beginning), then one day something changes (i.e. he decides to stop trying to hide who he is). Because of that, these things happen (moves to Metropolis, gets a job at Daily Planet, meets Lois and Lex) which cause something else to happen (Lex attacking Superman’s character and launching the attack on Metropolis) and finally ends with this (Superman saving the city and redeeming himself). It’s classic storytelling, but the details and the character interactions make it an interesting read. The history behind Lex and Clark would be really interesting to read more about, and I would love to see how this dynamic ends up playing out as they move from this point in the story. I was also really enjoying what we got of Lois. I would be interested in reading more about her! Superman, himself…I’m just not sure. There’s nothing wrong with him…I just don’t really find him all that interesting on his own. Still, this story is well worth the read!

Final Opinion: Solid

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (4/3 – 4/9)

Overall

This felt like a really good week with everything I read – almost everything was really good! Usually its pretty mixed, but everything was on point this week! I’m pretty happy with most of what I picked up. This coming week is going to be interesting, because there are so many new issues coming out. Also, I do plan on making those cuts sometime this coming week – I think I finally worked out a system of putting every series in order and then looking at the ones at the bottom and cutting from there. There will probably be a few that have been doing alright lately that still don’t make the cut, and I have an idea of what they will be, but I’ll do a post on it at some point. It just feels like it’s time to cut the sheer number of series I’m reading!

The Gender Through Comics class has been really interesting so far. It has mostly been on Gender in society and how it is learned and expressed. We do talk some about what we see in comics, but the bulk of what we seem to be learning has been about gender as a concept in and off itself, which has been pretty fascinating. Did you know there are societies that have more than two genders? Many have three…but some have up to 8! I thought that was such an interesting idea, and I really want to look more into those societies that have extra genders and see what all they do! It also just makes me kind of sad that our society is so hell-bent on only seeing two.

Plenty to read this coming week, so keep an eye out for the Opinions that will be coming out!

Mini-Opinions – Monday Edition

Batman #13-#18

Yeah….Death of the Family was just as amazing as everyone made it out to be. How the heck did you guys wait a month between issues? I devoured the whole thing at once…and I don’t think I could have done it any other way!! That was an awesome story, hands down. I’ve always known about the joker – you can’t really miss him in all of the movies that have come out, but wow, I really liked him as a character here. He completely had me hooked and intrigued – as sadistic as it might be…I kind of want to see him in another story. We don’t really know he’s gone. We saw him fall…but we saw nothing after that. I can hope, right?

Also, THANK GOD for the return of Harper!! I was so excited when I saw her again!! I kind of wonder what they have in store for her…I’ve heard rumors of the next Robin, but I’ve also heard rumors saying someone else is going to fill that role (I’m not entirely sure who)…but I hope they keep her around somehow!

Final Opinion: Must Read!!
