Comic Newbie Week in Summary (5/1 – 5/7)

Overall

My weeks have been pretty slow lately. Between work eating up a lot of my time (we’re right near the end of a project, so time is usually eaten at this point…) and settling on and closing for a condo (closing was TODAY!) and starting to move in, it’s been a pretty big whirlwind around here. What little time I have hasn’t really been devoted to comics, unfortunately enough. I kind of miss them and I’m hoping to find some more time, but it’s very possible that this week wont be any better. Spare time will probably be taken up with packing/cleaning/moving. Sounds fun, right? (sarcasm)

Sorry for posting this so late, guys. Like I said, real life is taking up a LOT of time…

Comic Newbie Week In Summary (4/24 – 4/30)

Overall

This was another pretty slow week. Things at home have just been so busy that it’s been impossible to spend a whole lot of time reading much of anything. I dont know that it’s going to slow down any time soon. Also, I feel like I’m a little burnt out, and what downtime I do have, I usually just want to be lazy and do nothing instead of read (and you would think reading would be a good downtime thing to do. It’s just not working for me right now…) We shall see how next week goes!

I do think I need to start taking a break from picking up new series at some point – it’s starting to get a little overwhelming. After this week, I might not pick up anything new except for another series or two that has been on my radar for a while now. Really need to slow down!

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (4/17 – 4/23)

Overall

Kind of running late today guys – sorry!

This was kind of a slow week in the comics department. I think real life kind of snuck up on me and gave me a sucker punch – it’s been pretty crazy around here, and it doesn’t look like things are going to get much better for a little while at least. So reading may be a bit slow for a bit longer. Sorry guys!! Otherwise, I’m really happy that I started catching up on series. Finally getting to read the beginning of Captain Marvel and getting through AvX were probably the highlights of my week (I finally got to cross them off my list of issues I still needed to read!) Hopefully I can get through the new stuff and class stuff this week, but we shall see

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (4/10-4/16)

Overall

Well, this was an interesting week – slower overall (I think…) but some really good series packed in. Tried a couple of new series, made a lot of decisions on which series I should keep reading, and how to spot them from now on – I feel like this week went really well. I’m sad to see some series go, especially ones I was really hopefully would get better (Indestructible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Uncanny X-Men) but I know I made the right choice in the end. I will try to keep my ear to the ground in case they ever start to pick up, and I can jump back in.

Class wise, I’m really enjoying what we’re learning. I feel like I’m learning a lot and it’s definitely changing the way I look at comics, though I try not to comment on it too much yet. I want to finish off the class first!! But I’m so excited because our interviews this week include Kelly Sue DeConnick!! So excited to hear from her! We almost always have some great questions so I think it’ll be a really good discussion!

My list of things to read is slowly dwindling, which is nice. I feel like, in a few more weeks, I might actually be caught up and only reading new issues or picking up a new series here and there. We shall see, in the end, but I’m hopeful!

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (4/3 – 4/9)

Overall

This felt like a really good week with everything I read – almost everything was really good! Usually its pretty mixed, but everything was on point this week! I’m pretty happy with most of what I picked up. This coming week is going to be interesting, because there are so many new issues coming out. Also, I do plan on making those cuts sometime this coming week – I think I finally worked out a system of putting every series in order and then looking at the ones at the bottom and cutting from there. There will probably be a few that have been doing alright lately that still don’t make the cut, and I have an idea of what they will be, but I’ll do a post on it at some point. It just feels like it’s time to cut the sheer number of series I’m reading!

The Gender Through Comics class has been really interesting so far. It has mostly been on Gender in society and how it is learned and expressed. We do talk some about what we see in comics, but the bulk of what we seem to be learning has been about gender as a concept in and off itself, which has been pretty fascinating. Did you know there are societies that have more than two genders? Many have three…but some have up to 8! I thought that was such an interesting idea, and I really want to look more into those societies that have extra genders and see what all they do! It also just makes me kind of sad that our society is so hell-bent on only seeing two.

Plenty to read this coming week, so keep an eye out for the Opinions that will be coming out!

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (3/27-4/2)

Overall

This week was a slower week, but no less interesting! Still working on finding the writers and series that I want to follow long-term, though I think I’m slowly making decisions in my head. Expect some more cuts to be coming in the next few weeks!

Also, the Gender Through Comics class started up yesterday, so I may be more absent than usual from here! The class has only been running for one day, but I’ve already done all the reading and been through all of this weeks coursework one time (I’d like to read through it again either today or tomorrow). It’s really interesting so far, but we’re really just starting with a foundation. I think, if anyone is still interested in joining, there is still time to do so!

Reviews of the comics that I read for class will also be coming, but I will try to keep them short, and probably away from the topics we are talking about in class…at least until we’re done with the class. Then all bets are off!

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (3/20-3/26)

Overall

This was a fun week! I had a lot of free time, so I got through a lot of series that I’ve been saving for a while. Lots of really good series, and just as many flops, but what can you do? This is the only way to figure out what you do and don’t like, especially when you’re not the type of person to take people’s recommendation without question (sorry guys, but I have to read on my own and make my own opinion on everything!)

I quite enjoyed myself this week! But really, I don’t think I’m going to do many weeks where I read 26 issues and a TPB all in one week!! Especially now that real life things are going to be getting in the way (I’m buying a Condo! As exciting as that is, it eats up a LOT of time!) things might slow down. But then again, I’ve said that before and it hasn’t really happened, so who knows!

Still working on what the cutoff is going to be for dropping a series. I dropped 4 this week for very different reasons and after reading different amounts (some were dropped after 2 issues, others were dropped after 3), but I’d like to have a more formal system. I’m thinking of adding another rating (Potential Drop) for the first issue that’s bad but I want to give it another chance, and if it hits the same level again, then we do a full drop. Then, for Iffy’s, 3 in a row will create a drop (a Potential Drop, followed by two Iffy’s would also constitute a drop). And I can still do a full drop of a new series whenever. I just want to have a check on myself to make sure I’m not buying issues unnecessarily.

Comic Newbie Week In Summary (3/13 – 3/19)

Overall

This as been a pretty awesome week 🙂 I’ve been trying out my new format and rating system, and I really like it! It leaves me with more free time, so I can work the rest of my life around reading and posting. It also lets me read a little quicker, so I feel like I’ve gotten through more of my unread pile this week than the week before. I can actually see myself catching up with all of the series that have been sitting on the back-burner, waiting to be picked up!

Now, I feel like I need to start focusing on individual series, and which ones I really want to continue reading versus which ones I need to drop. I have a hard time with this right now, especially when a series is tied into other series that I’m enjoying (I’m specifically thinking Fantastic Four and FF here, but there are others…). Still, there needs to be some way of saying that I’ve given any specific series enough of a chance, and now it’s time to let them go. So here’s what I’m thinking: With this new rating system, I know when I’m iffy about a specific issue. So it would make sense that if a specific series receives a number of “Iffy” ratings in a row, say 3, then I should probably stop picking up more of that series unless I start to hear it’s turning around. I’ve got some time before that is going to happen, so I’ll play with that idea for now and see what ends up happening!

I’m cutting out the question section this week because I forgot to keep track of questions!! I will try and pick it up again next week!

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (3/6 – 3/12)

Overall

This week has been really interesting. I think I’m starting to get an idea of what series and kinds of stories I enjoy and which ones I’m starting to get a lot iffy-er about for one reason or another. I’m starting to think about going through my list and maybe removing some series in a couple of weeks, because I don’t want to keep buying a story that I’m not enjoying…especially when I do have a lot of stories that I love and can’t wait for. I’m going to think over that more this coming week and see what I can do.

I’m also thinking about scaling back a little on what I’m doing here. I spent a little more time this week doing things that I used to do before comics exploded into my life and took over for a little while. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything – I’m so glad I found these stories and this medium. They’re amazing and every now and then I find myself catching my breath on a particular panel or plot twist. But I think I need to rebalance a little bit after the initial explosion. I spent some time this week reconnecting with the rest of my life, and reminding myself that there are more things I want to do as well as read comics!

So, next week, I’m going to try a slightly different format. I’m going to post opinions twice during the week – I’m thinking Friday/Saturday and Monday/Tuesday. Each post, I’ll post smaller opinions for multiple issues and series in one place. No more summaries of the plot, just a quick opinion and a ranking/category at the very end: Must Read, Solid, Iffy, and Drop. Obviously any issue rated “Drop” wont be picked up again. Then I’ll post this summary on Wednesdays. I’m not sure if this format will work, but I figure I’ll try it for a week or two and then reassess.
