(Online) College Classes, here I come…again…

So I don’t know how many of you saw this when I originally posted it up, but there is this free, online class from Ball State  called “Gender Through Comic Books” that is promising to be pretty awesome. It’s going to be starting this coming Monday, but you can still enroll! They are bringing in some pretty big names for interviews as part of this (Mark Waid, Scott Snyder, Brian Bendis, and lots more) and it just sounds all around amazing. The course itself is free, but the reading list is rather extensive (see that here) and you do have to pay for that. But still, I think it’s going to be a really interesting topic and a really interesting class! If anyone else would like to enroll, the link is below:

I’ve just signed myself up, and I’m really keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep up with my typical work schedule. So if things around here slow down come Monday, you all know why!! I will be reading comics…just not the ones that I put up here! I hope some of you will join me!

Mini-Opinions – Friday Edition

And we are onto a new, crazy week. I still feel like a huge pile of things to get through, and this week I won’t have quite as much time as before. We shall see how this goes!

Fantastic Four #4 and #5

Well…this is getting better. I wouldn’t say that it’s getting good, but we’re making steps in the right direction. I liked the background we got in issue #4, the running story of how Reed and Sue met and eventually married. It was a really cute story, especially when the exact opposite, the lack of trust from Reed, was going on in the main storyline. I think having those two side-by-side was pretty telling when it came to Reed, and I enjoyed what was going on and the cliffhanger we were left on (FINALLY! Something that kind of made you want the next issue…). #5 was a cute story with the kids and Ceasar that was, apparently, setting something up that I assume will be in FF (if the shot of the newspaper article had anything to do with it…). We also got some serious talk between Reed and Sue, and it’s finally starting to feel a like we’re seeing the tiniest slivers of a running storyline. I’m still not sold on this one, though.

I really don’t understand this though. I LOVE Fraction’s writing in Hawkeye and FF. We know that he can make a good running storyline (through FF) and a good episodic series (Hawkeye). I don’t understand why those two titles feel like they’re leaps and bounds ahead of this one when we have the same author. Because it isn’t the art that’s the problem here…there is very little happening in the story that makes you want to keep at it. And I just don’t understand how these opposite things can come from the same author!

Final Opinion: Iffy (2nd in a row)

Comic Newbie Week in Summary (3/20-3/26)

Overall

This was a fun week! I had a lot of free time, so I got through a lot of series that I’ve been saving for a while. Lots of really good series, and just as many flops, but what can you do? This is the only way to figure out what you do and don’t like, especially when you’re not the type of person to take people’s recommendation without question (sorry guys, but I have to read on my own and make my own opinion on everything!)

I quite enjoyed myself this week! But really, I don’t think I’m going to do many weeks where I read 26 issues and a TPB all in one week!! Especially now that real life things are going to be getting in the way (I’m buying a Condo! As exciting as that is, it eats up a LOT of time!) things might slow down. But then again, I’ve said that before and it hasn’t really happened, so who knows!

Still working on what the cutoff is going to be for dropping a series. I dropped 4 this week for very different reasons and after reading different amounts (some were dropped after 2 issues, others were dropped after 3), but I’d like to have a more formal system. I’m thinking of adding another rating (Potential Drop) for the first issue that’s bad but I want to give it another chance, and if it hits the same level again, then we do a full drop. Then, for Iffy’s, 3 in a row will create a drop (a Potential Drop, followed by two Iffy’s would also constitute a drop). And I can still do a full drop of a new series whenever. I just want to have a check on myself to make sure I’m not buying issues unnecessarily.

Mini-Opinions – Monday Edition

Insurgent #3

I feel like I wasted quite a bit of money this week. Between Fearless Defenders, Katana, and this one, I would have been happier picking up a TPB of something else! I was having a hard time understanding why I didn’t like this series. It’s got an interesting premise, really. But the story isn’t told well…and the characters are about as two-dimensional as you get. I don’t care about what happens to them. Oh well…I tried. But halfway into this story, I just can’t find it in me to care. I’ll be dropping this series as well…

Final Opinion: Drop

Mini-Opinions – Friday Edition

Continuing with the mini-opinions, which will hopefully be scheduled for Friday and Monday from now on. Plenty of new issues this week, plus a few new series I picked up and others that have been waiting for me to find some time. I’m hoping to get through as many as I can!!

Nova #2

I enjoyed this issue! It was a bit of a filler issue in that we really didn’t meet anyone new (unless you count the very end…) but we did establish that Sam has figured out the helmet and suit and kind of knows how to operate it. We also establish that something went rather wrong with whatever his father was doing, which is why he now has the helmet, and why Rocket Raccoon and Gamora came to him in the first place. I’m kind of curious about the panel with the mother looking out the window…think she knows more than she’s letting on? I wish we had run a little more with the story, but I still liked it overall.

Final Opinion: Solid

Comic Newbie Week In Summary (3/13 – 3/19)

Overall

This as been a pretty awesome week 🙂 I’ve been trying out my new format and rating system, and I really like it! It leaves me with more free time, so I can work the rest of my life around reading and posting. It also lets me read a little quicker, so I feel like I’ve gotten through more of my unread pile this week than the week before. I can actually see myself catching up with all of the series that have been sitting on the back-burner, waiting to be picked up!

Now, I feel like I need to start focusing on individual series, and which ones I really want to continue reading versus which ones I need to drop. I have a hard time with this right now, especially when a series is tied into other series that I’m enjoying (I’m specifically thinking Fantastic Four and FF here, but there are others…). Still, there needs to be some way of saying that I’ve given any specific series enough of a chance, and now it’s time to let them go. So here’s what I’m thinking: With this new rating system, I know when I’m iffy about a specific issue. So it would make sense that if a specific series receives a number of “Iffy” ratings in a row, say 3, then I should probably stop picking up more of that series unless I start to hear it’s turning around. I’ve got some time before that is going to happen, so I’ll play with that idea for now and see what ends up happening!

I’m cutting out the question section this week because I forgot to keep track of questions!! I will try and pick it up again next week!

Off the Beaten Path…

So, I had to share a couple of comics that SM sent me that very much illustrate some parts of my life 😛 I’m sure not everyone will agree with these (especially the first one), but these sorts of situations are not that uncommon for me. Enjoy!

Mini-Opinions, Attempt #2

X-Men Legacy #7

I’m not sure if I could tell you why I love X-Men Legacy so much. David is a really interesting character, first off. And really, the series never takes itself that seriously. When there are so many other series that I’m reading that do take a very serious tone, this is always a nice break. Plus a lot of the supporting characters are interesting too – I really want to know more about Blindfold, and the two are interesting together. This issue seems like it might be the start of a new arc, seeing as we finished one with the last issue. Most of it was filler, albiet entertaining filler. We really didn’t get the next arc until the very end. But I’m excited to see where this goes!

Final Opinion: Solid

Mini-Opinions, Attempt #1

Trying out the new format this week – let me know if you guys like this or not! Its definitely a little easier for me to do this than to do bigger posts for each issue!

Mind The Gap #8

Okay, so I’m not sure if maybe I’m just getting so lost in all the details that I’m missing things, but this may be the first filler-like issue for Mind the Gap. There were certainly some interesting tidbits in the conversations, but it feels like no new information was really introduced here. At least in terms of the mystery happening in the real world…the Garden is a different story. Don’t get me wrong, I fully enjoyed the issue! It just wasn’t one of the better ones that have come out so far. I’m really looking forward to the next issue – which is supposed to be a “silent” issue 🙂

Final Opinion: Solid
